Ongoing Research

Our work includes three existing birth cohorts:  the Hispanic Eating and Nutrition (HEN Cohort), the Latino, Eating and Diabetes Cohort (LEAD) and the Telomeres at Birth study (TAB).

Latinos account for more than half of the U.S. population growth since 2000, an unprecedented growth spurt that puts the total Hispanic population at a record 57 million, according to the Pew Research Center (2014).

Type 2 diabetes, which is the most common type of diabetes, is rampant in Hispanic communities and has very serious complications when it’s not kept under control, such as blindness and amputations. That’s why it’s so important that there be increased awareness among Hispanics about pre-diabetes as well as diabetes since when pre-diabetes is diagnosed and managed properly, diabetes can be prevented..
